MAG500A review: top-of-the-line Android TV STB by Infomir
In April 2021, the European IPTV device manufacturer presented the MAG500A, its new fifth-generation Android TV set-top box (STB). With an all-new makeover and improved features, the MAG500A is a great improvement on its predecessor.
This MAG500A review will focus in detail on both its capabilities and design.
- MAG500A set-top box
- Remote control
- 2 AAA batteries
- HDMI cable
- Power supply unit
- User Manual
The MAG500A comes with an Omni Opal Bluetooth remote control which can be easily paired with the STB by pressing two buttons. A brief how-to video on pairing will play on your TV when you first start the STB. The remote control firmware updates along with the STB software. You can also update the remote manually.
The remote has 15 buttons, including the Google Assistant button. Simply press it and ask a question or give a command to find a movie, a YouTube video, get the weather forecast and exact time, or learn other information.
Omni Opal maintains a steady connection with the STB at all times. The remote control is powered by 2 AAA batteries. You can check the remaining charge in the settings menu. It comes with batteries, so you can start using the remote out of the box.
MAG500A is powered by mains with a switched-mode power supply. The unit receives the input voltage of 90–264 V at 50–60 Hz. The output voltage is 5 V with 10 W power.
The PSU’s unique feature is its cable length. A standard PSU cable is generally under 80 cm long. The MAG500A’s PSU cable, however, is 150 cm long, giving you more freedom when placing your STB.
The HDMI cable is also longer than a standard one—150 cm. The cable has thick insulation which prevents breaking and twisting.
The User Manual has recommendations on connecting the STB and remote control. The device certificate has a warranty sheet.
The electronic version of the User Manual is also available for download from Infomir’s official website at:
For your convenience, the last page of the User Manual has a sticker with the model name, MAC address, serial number, and manufacture date. A similar sticker can be found on the bottom of your STB.
The STB case has the black matte Qubic design and fits well in any interior, while its compact size (120 × 78 × 21 mm) means you can put it anywhere.
The MAG500A front panel has a black polished section, behind which are the power indicator and IR sensor for an alternative remote control.
The left panel has two USB ports: USB 2.0 on the left and USB 3.0 on the right. The former can be used to connect peripheral devices, such as a computer keyboard and mouse. The latter is a better choice for external data storage devices since data is transferred faster via the USB 3.0 interface.
On the back panel, there is a 5 В power inlet, an HDMI port, an Ethernet port, and an Fn button to access system functions. The Fn button can be used to manually reset the STB to factory settings and activate other program options.
There is a sticker on the bottom of the MAG500A with the device serial number, MAC address, and manufacture date on it. Next to it is a holographic warranty seal.
Infomir recommends its users to register at https://my.infomir.eu/eng/ and verify their devices. There are many low-quality STBs from unknown brands on the IPTV market. The manufacturers of such devices can pass them off as MAG series. By registering their STB, users can make sure that they enjoy a genuine, high-quality product.
