MAG520/MAG520w3 review: the new generation of Infomir's 4K-capable Linux set-top box
In early 2021, Infomir — one of the world's largest IPTV/OTT equipment manufacturers — announced its 5th-generation Linux set-top boxes: MAG520 and MAG520w3. The new devices show a 25% higher performance than their predecessors.
Let's take a detailed look at Infomir MAG520's specifications and appearance.
Included with the set-top box is an SRC-4015 IR remote control. It is made of durable no-slip polymeric material and fits comfortably in your hand. The remote can switch between three IR code pages to avoid interference from nearby IR-controlled devices (e.g., a TV or audio system). For more details, consult the User Manual.
The remote is powered by two AAA batteries included in the package. No need to bother finding or buying additional batteries.
The device uses a pulse power supply unit with a universal connector (input voltage: 90–264 V @ 50–60 Hz; output voltage: 5 V, 10 W).
No overheating was detected during its use. The power cord is 1,50-meter-long, which comes in handy. Usually, such devices have a power cord no longer than 80 cm, making it difficult to find a place for the set-top box.
The HDMI cable is rather long, too, at 150 cm. It also has dense, high-quality sleeving to prevent tangling and kinking.
User Manual. The User Manual includes a warranty booklet, a Quick Start Guide, as well as set-top box and remote control manuals.
It can be downloaded via the following links:
On the last page of the User Manual, there is a sticker with the model name, serial number, MAC address, and date of manufacture. A similar ID sticker can be found on the bottom of the set-top box body.
The device is housed in a Qubic black plastic body with a matte finish and dimensions of 120×78×21 mm. Thanks to its compact design, the set-top box can be placed anywhere and blends seemlessly in any interior.
There is a glossy panel on the front of the device's body with a power indicator and an IR receiver underneath.
The left side has two USB ports: a USB 2.0 port on the left and a USB 3.0 port on the right.
On the back of the device, there is a 5 V power input, an HDMI port, a LAN Ethernet port, and an Fn button for restoring factory defaults or activating other software options.
On the bottom of the set-top box body, there is an ID sticker with a serial number, MAC address, date of manufacture, and holographic warranty seal.
Infomir recommends verifying the authenticity of MAG devices by registering them via the official link. The IPTV equipment market is flooded by low-quality set-top boxes from no-name manufacturers day by day. Some of those may be misrepresented as MAG devices. Registering your set-top box, you can rest assured that it's a genuine, high-quality product. Find out if you fell victim to fraud.
MAG520/MAG520w3: Technical specifications
CPU and memory
At the heart of the MAG520, there is an ARM Cortex-A53 CPU with a clock frequency of 1,900 MHz. The device also has 4 GB of internal storage and 1 GB of RAM. MAG520 runs on Linux 4.9. HEVC support enables the device to play 4K video even on low-bandwidth connections (up to 3–5 Mbps). The Mali-G31 MP2 GPU supports OpenGL ES 3.2, Vulkan 1.0, and OpenCL 2.0 for smooth 3D graphics.
The set-top box supports legacy and modern video formats: PAL, NTSC, 576p, 720p, 1080p, 1080i, and 4K high-res video (2160p).
The supported subtitle formats are DVB, PGS, SRT, SSA/ASS, SUB, WebVtt; Teletext and closed captions are also available.
The MAG520 IPTV box is compatible with modern audio systems and supports Dolby Digital Plus™ for clear surround sound. This can be enabled only on TVs and home theatres with DDP support.
The MAG520 box has two USB ports, a standard USB 2.0 for peripherals and a faster USB 3.0 for external storage.
The set-top box connects to the TV via HDMI 2.1. This interface enables 4K video and eight-channel audio playback on your TV.
The set-top box connects to the Internet via a 100 Mbps Ethernet port. The MAG520w3 variant is also equipped with a dual-band Wi-Fi module (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz), wireless connection speed reaching 550 Mbps.
The only difference between the MAG520w3 and the MAG520 is the built-in Wi-Fi module in the former.
The MAG520 and MAG520w3 Linux set-top boxes are powerful media players enabling their users to enjoy modern IPTV/OTT services. The devices play 4K HDR videos with minimum network load, support 8-channel sound and a variety of video formats.
